Put on your cruisin’ shoes, people, and let’s talk shipboard fashion…

In praise of the blingy flat sandal…

Traditionally, cruising hasn’t been considered particularly… fashionable. You’d see lots of folks in t-shirts (often featuring some form of the phrase “booze cruise”) and khaki shorts, as well as the perennial hawaiian shirts on the guys. Formal night kicked it up a notch, with the gents in tuxes or suits and the ladies in elegant, if a little predictable, cocktail dresses and gowns. It was pretty much the same every time.

My friends, I think this is all changing. I really do. I’m seeing outfits on cruises now I NEVER thought I would (even on myself!) and I love it. People are taking some fashion RISKS and I am here for it. Rompers, sequined jumpsuits, floor-length tropical print ball gowns – check, check and CHECK, I’ve seen them all. And you know what? The folks wearing these were ROCKING them.

I don’t know if it’s the availability of fast fashion in general or just the ability to get every kind of crazy thing in the world on Amazon (true confession: this is where I get my growing wardrobe of flat-but-blingy sandals – which have changed my LIFE cause ya girl too clumsy for heels!). Whatever the reason, people are really serving up the looks on cruise ships these days, and I just can’t get enough.

It’s also really encouraged me to make some more daring choices and come out of my fashion shell a little bit. Hello, floor-length see-through white lace coverup, YOU are going right in my suitcase for my next sailing — cause you looked really awesome on that lady in the Solarium…

Anyone else out there seeing fashion they never thought they would on cruises? I’m noticing it particularly with the younger folks, and I love the festive, creative energy. Have you yourself WORN things you never thought you’d consider or seen some clothing… not-quite-successes? Please let me know!
